Program/Rotation/Description: Omeo District Health offers a structured 12-month Graduate Registered Nurse Program designed to provide broad exposure across rural and remote healthcare settings. The program supports the development of safe, competent, and confident clinicians through a combination of clinical rotations, structured education, and dedicated educator support. All graduates will complete a hospital-wide orientation program prior to commencement of clinical rotations. The rotation structure is as follows: Rotation 1 – Residential Aged Care (RAC) Graduates commence in Residential Aged Care to build foundational skills in clinical assessment, medication management, and person-centred care. 2 days supernumerary at commencement Transition to rostered shifts following orientation Night duty will not commence until completion of a minimum of 4 weeks of early and late shifts Rotation 2 – Primary Health and Bush Nursing (Ensay) This rotation provides exposure to primary care, chronic disease management, health promotion, and autonomous rural nursing practice within a bush nursing setting. 2 days supernumerary Transition to rostered shifts Rotation 3 – Acute and Urgent Care Centre (UCC) Graduates gain experience in acute inpatient care and urgent presentations, including assessment, escalation, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. 2 days supernumerary Transition to rostered shifts Night duty will not commence until completion of a minimum of 4 weeks of early and late shifts Rotation 4 – District Nursing, Community and Transition Care Program (TCP) This rotation provides exposure across community-based care, including home visits, care coordination, and subacute/TCP services (both inpatient and outpatient). 2 days supernumerary Transition to rostered shifts The final component of the program allows for consolidation of learning, annual leave, and flexibility to support individual development needs.
Education and Support:
Dedicated Clinical Nurse Educator oversight of the program
One protected education/skills day per fortnight for each graduate
Structured graduate education program with all training days pre-scheduled and entered into the roster
Ongoing clinical support and supervision across all rotations
Preceptor support within each clinical area
This program is designed to provide graduates with a comprehensive and supportive rural generalist experience, preparing them for ongoing practice within small health services.
